The museum "ELLERT and BRAMMERT" was founded in 1954.In that year the town "Schoonoord" did celebrate it's 100th anniversary.Few years before the canal "Oranjekanaal" did celebrate it's 100th birthday.Some dozens of years ago,Schoonoord was nothing more then a settlement of cancer huts,that where inhabited by workers,who where coming from the areas surrounding to work.Because of opening up the "Oranjekanaal" peats could be developed.

Thoose mixed population,some even coming from Hannover Germany,lived poor and simple,wellworking,but rough and people from the surrounding town in Drenthe where afraid of them.A Pastor said,that they where not Germans and Dutchmen,but savages.This also because of the primitive housing of this people.In memory of this historical situation,they rebuilt the cancer huts and other buildings in 1954.Later more things where added.

The Legend of "ELLERT AND BRAMMERT"

In every area and in every country in time there are stories that become legends.Also in the area of Schoonoord this is a fact and it's welknown in the whole province.The legend of Ellert and Brammert.Also "the Ellertsveld" thanks his name to the two giants.In years,the story of the giants came in serveral versions,but the core stays the same........

The story is,that for 400 years ago,2 giants did live here,father and son.They where harsh guys,who made a underground place to live in,in a big heathland field now named "het Ellertsveld".From their place they poached the area.People that didn't have to travel by the field didn't venture themselfs there.

Ellert and Brammert had wires in all directions from their house,with bells connected.If a traveler touched one of thoose wires,the bell would ring and the two giants would make their move.They used their thick pole-axes to beat them down and they got robbed.Many travelors and buy folks got in their hands,some where very lucky to get away alive.

One day,while the giants where foraged by the heathland,they discovered on the ash of the town Orvelteveen a beautifull,young girl named Marieke.The poor girl was captured and had to do housework for the giants.She did this 7 years....The bad side of having Marieke at home was,that the giants never could go together again out for robbing.One always had to stay with her so she couldn't run away.One day,while father was alone with Marieke,he did ask het to shave him.Marieke didn't have to think long....as she did shave Ellert,she did cut his throat with a razor-sharp razor.While he was fell dying in eachother,Marieke did run away.The time that Brammert found out what happend with his father,he started to follow Marieke...but he couldn't get her....The morning after they did find a big axe in the door where Marieke was hiding.

Marieke and her family did move the next day,as where also the other people from Orvelterveen.They where afraid for the revenge from Brammert.Not long after this,the whole town Orvelterveen did moved to another place.

I don't know what is true of the story,difficult to get the truth now......Orvelterveen was really a town between the towns Orvelte and de Kiel.In 1911 they did find some old clays thresh floors from farmhouses while digging sand.
